I am now using the Fujan carbon-fibre tuning lever. It's not often new technological products hit the small world of piano tuning. Read more on my Facebook or WordPress pages...
These levers are amazing! The result is a more accurate tuning with greater stability - and better stability means the piano holds its tune for longer.
I provide a complete tuning / technician service in the Harrogate,
Wetherby and York areas. You will find my charges are competitive and within the guidelines set by the Pianoforte
Tuners' Association. I am fully insured for public liability - an essential requirement for working in schools and other public establishments.
For ultimate piano care, our Tuned4u piano maintenance scheme includes 2 tunings
per year plus free call-out to piano emergencies such as
broken strings or hammers and other problems which can
interrupt your enjoyment. Payment is collected painlessly by monthly standing order.
Please phone or email me if you
would like to book an appointment or require further details.
Alternatively, use the Availability Checker (left) to check available tuning appointments for your area.
Please note: a recently moved piano will require approximately 6 weeks to settle into new surroundings. The soundboard (to which the strings connect)
slowly expands or contracts in response to the humidity levels of its environment.
Although it is not detrimental to tune a piano before it is fully acclimatised, it would be unlikely to stay in tune for very long.
The Pianoforte Tuners' Association offers an automated tuning reminder service which you are welcome to use. Just click on the link at the left-hand side of this page. You'll find me listed (as Mr Butterworth) in the drop-down list headed 'select your tuner.' This service is additional to the normal reminder service I usually operate with my regular clients.
Repair / Technician Service
I am qualified in all aspects of piano restoration and my daily work includes regulation and repair
of both upright and grand pianos. I also take
in action and keyboard repair & refurbishment work and restringing jobs.
I have been established in Harrogate for some 20 years and in addition to servicing the pianos of my own clients, I have been regular tuner for the
Harrogate Piano Centre and more recently for Woods of Bradford at their Harrogate music store.
I qualified at City of
Leeds College of Music gaining a National Diploma in Musical Instrument Technology (Piano)
and a City and Guilds of the London Institute in Piano Repair and Tuning. In 2000 I became
a member of the Pianoforte Tuners’ Association which required passing a further examination.
Although there is little public awareness of the Pianoforte Tuners' Association it is the only
true regulating professional body of piano tuners. Their membership qualification sets the
standard for the profession. By employing a PTA member you can be assured of skilled
workmanship from a trained specialist. That is why members are sought by concert
organisers, top musicians, piano shops and piano hire companies nationwide.
Membership of the
PTA and the other associations mentioned on this page helps a piano tuner to keep up
to date on developments within the industry. Through internet forums, conventions and regular newsletters,
piano tuners can help each other out, and share and solve any technical problems they may encounter. Thus a
PTA member is generally
better equipped to deal with your piano and better informed when it comes to giving advice.
I find through my
links with the PTA that I am often in demand for work in theatres, local festivals and events
in addition to regular tunings in our hotels, schools, colleges, institutions and of course,
in the home. For more about the PTA, or to find a piano tuner in your area, click on
